CERTIFIED MEDITATION TEACHER (CMT) Program

Diplomas & Certificates for Professional Meditation Teachers

After a powerful, transcendent meditative experience, it’s only natural to want to share that bliss & happiness with the people around you. Many people find a calling in the field of meditation — even a life mission, a purpose in life — to help other people experience the profound and life-altering beauty of meditation as well.

On the other hand, there are snake-oil-gurus who just want to make money off of a trend, tricking gullible aspirants into personality cults, with wild claims, and sometimes even outright lies.

We separate the wheat from the chaff, and give certifications to the meditation teachers who deserve them. We have specific qualifications that we look for before certifying Certified Meditation Teachers (CMTs).

We are a secular and non-denominational organization, and therefore we do not discriminate based on type, style, technique, or tradition of meditation. What we look for in teachers is:

Personal Meditation Practice (Daily)

To receive certification as a professional meditation teacher, applicants must certify that they have maintained a daily meditation practice for a period of at least three months leading up to the certification date, or at least one year in a previous time period.

Passion for Meditation

Passionate teachers inspire others, and provide motivation for new meditators to persevere on their own meditative journeys. Teachers who are just in it for the money generally do more harm than good to the students that they presume to help.

Understanding of Meditation

Whereas hard sciences like math and physics are rather concrete, meditation lives at the intersection between art and science. As something that deals with such subjective experiences, meditation can be a nebulous thing. Some people have a deep understanding of what meditation is, how to do it, what it’s about, and what it can do. Others simply do not. We make sure that our teachers have a deep understanding of meditation before bestowing certification.

Clarity of Communication

Even passionate meditators with a deep understanding must be able to communicate it in order to teach. We only certify teachers who are able to communicate clearly what meditation is, how to do it, and why it helps.

Ability to Convey Meditative States

Good meditation teachers must be able to communicate more than just the understanding of meditation; they must also be able to inspire meditative states in others. Conveying meditative states is more about holding the state inside of one’s self, and allowing students to perceive it, emulate it, and even absorb it, through body language, facial expressions, voice tone, and more.

Having Completed An Accredited Course or Passed A Certification Exam

All of the above qualifications are covered in our accredited Meditation Teacher Courses (MTCs) and our Meditation Certification Exams (MCEs). Teachers who have gone through an accredited course and/or passed a certification exam receive a Certified Meditation Teacher certificate or diploma from The Meditation Organization.

Frequently asked questions

How much does the certification cost?

We do not charge for meditation certification. We review and accredit meditation teacher training courses. We charge the course creators for the review and accreditation process. Your tuition fees for your teacher training course covers the costs of the certification.

WILL I NEED TO PAY ONGOING FEES FOR MY MEDITATION TEACHER CERTIFICATION?

While some certifying bodies do charge annual fees, we believe this puts an undue burden on teachers, and creates a conflict of interest for the certifying body. For these reasons, we do not charge any ongoing fees for certified meditation teachers.

What benefits are provided by this certification?

Our Meditation Teacher Certification allows you to teach meditation with confidence, knowing that you have taken a Meditation Teacher Training course that has been reviewed and accredited by a panel of professional meditation teachers. It also gives your students and/or clients the confidence to know that you know what you’re talking about, and that there is a certification body that they can report to in case of problems or ethics violations.

Where is this meditation certification recognized?

Unlike doctors and lawyers, meditation teachers are not currently regulated by world governments. So, while a lawyer’s or doctor’s (or even a massage therapist’s) certification may be valid to practice only in a particular geographic region, meditation certifications are not limited in this way. This means meditation teachers are free to teach meditation anywhere in the world. Until the meditation industry is regulated by world governments, this Meditation Teacher Certification will be valid anywhere in the world. If major world governments (for example, in the US, Canada, UK, Australia, etc) begin to regulate meditation teachers in the future and require government certification/licensure, The Meditation Organization will be among the first to apply to have our Certified Meditation Teachers recognized by those governments.

Is there anything I need to do to maintain my certification?WILL I NEED TO PAY ONGOING FEES FOR MY MEDITATION TEACHER CERTIFICATION?

While we highly recommend continuing education, we do not make it a requirement for continued certification. However, we do require strictly ethical behavior on the part of our Certified Meditation Teachers. If we receive serious complaints from your students, we reserve the right to investigate and possibly revoke your TMO Meditation Teacher certification.
