Teacher credential
Certified Meditation Teacher
Requirements for individual teachers seeking an organizational meditation credential.
Published teacher requirements
The organization describes the following qualities and prerequisites for Certified Meditation Teachers. It is secular and non-denominational and does not limit applicants to one meditation tradition.
Personal meditation practice
Applicants attest to a daily meditation practice for at least three months leading up to certification, or at least one year in a previous period.
Commitment to teaching
Teachers should approach the work with care for students and a genuine commitment to meditation practice.
Understanding of meditation
Applicants should demonstrate a grounded understanding of meditation, its practice, and its effects without overstating certainty or evidence.
Clarity of communication
Teachers must be able to explain what they teach, how to practice it, and why it may be useful.
Ability to guide practice
Applicants should be able to create conditions that help students enter meditative states through clear guidance and professional presence.
Training or examination
Applicants must have completed an accredited Meditation Teacher Course or passed a Meditation Certification Exam. The embedded certificate form specifically asks for a TMO Accredited Course number and graduate number.
Credential scope and conduct
CMT is an organizational credential, not a government license. Teachers must follow the Code of Conduct. Serious complaints may be reviewed and certification may be revoked under the published terms.
